During our time in New Zealand our lives were severely disrupted by the Christchurch earthquake, but at this point research was undertaken into the historic sites in that country. On returning to England time was spent travelling to France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and parts of Scandinavia with a focus on significant mediaeval Gothic, Renaissance, cultural and natural sites. In addition much of the research was done for London Churches Suburbs which is considered on a link page.
At the end of all this travelling we moved into a second converted stable by the old rail route at Merstone on the Isle of Wight, and due to so much work some light relief was needed. Originally it was decided never to do a fiction book again, but without any writers block and several good ideas The Four Idols of Destiny was written and printed in a matter of weeks.
Due to the author's interest in Sherlock Holmes mysteries and Indiana Jones adventures, the main plot was based on these, whilst the locations were inspired by European travel. The final decision was what cognomen to choose for the main character, and to reflect a continuity of the previous books, Professor Henry Pember was chosen. There were also felines such as Layabout to match Boltalot and Humpyone in the Wizards of Wight. As predicted it was very difficult to place a fiction book in the current climate, and the Four Idols remains a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
